It may be hard to believe, but just as adults are susceptible to gum disease, so are young children. Also known as gingivitis or periodontitis, it’s not difficult to cure your child’s condition. Better yet, it’s easy to prevent it in the first place. Here’s the bonus: In doing so, you’ll also be teaching your kids about the importance of maintaining excellent oral health.
When you need a pediatric dental practice that’s dedicated to providing the topmost standard of personalized care, look no further than the office of Milestones Children & Family Dentistry. Our goal is to provide a warm and welcoming experience for all youngsters and their parents.
What is gingivitis?
Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. If not removed, it becomes bacteria-laden tartar, which is hard and can be removed only by a dental professional. Tartar along the gum line is an irritant that brings on the swelling and bleeding of gingivitis. Inspect your child’s gums to see if they’re swollen or redder than normal. See if he (or she) spits out a bit of blood after brushing, and ask him if his gums are sore and sensitive.
Prevent and reverse.
Adherence to a regular, thorough brushing and flossing routine is essential. Most kids older than 5 can brush on their own, while younger kids need help forming effective techniques. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste is essential. Twice a day is good, and three times is excellent.
Cleaning between his teeth and under his gum line once he has two teeth that touch is essential. There are many types of string floss and floss picks; let him choose the kind he prefers. He should be a proficient brusher and flosser by the time he turns 10. Ask his pedodontist or oral hygienist for the best techniques.
If your child has gingivitis, sticking to the above practices should turn his gums from red to their normal pink in a few days or weeks. If not, visit his pedodonist for an evaluation to rule out other causes. And, of course, he should see his pedodontist every six months.
